Is a Reverse Osmosis Filter Worth It?

December 5th, 2016

We offer a number of different options for homeowners who want to have their water purified and filtered before it enters their home. Among these options is the reverse osmosis filtration system, which is an extremely powerful type of filter. Unlike most filters that passively remove particles as water flows through them, an RO filter forces the water through its filter, which allows for it to use a more powerful filtration medium. The semi-permeable membrane filter can remove many kinds of heavy metals, pesticides, high levels of sodium, and other specific chemical contaminants that can get through other types of fitlers.

However, RO filters are more expensive than standard filters. Is going with a reverse osmosis system worth it?

It Depends on Your Home

It’s true that reverse osmosis is an advanced form of water purification technology. How advanced? It’s used in military applications and even to deal with nuclear contaminants. Those are impressive credentials! But your home isn’t a military base, nor does it run from an in-home nuclear power plant. (Well, at least we hope not.) Do you really need the immense power of RO working in your house?

The answer is, “Yes… if there is a high concentration of pollutants in the water that other filters won’t do well against.” These pollutants include dissolved salts (sometimes created by a water softener), mercury, lead, calcium, iron, and asbestos. There are some pollutants that RO won’t affect, however, such as certain volatile organic compounds, including chlorine and radon, as well as specific types of pesticides.

Water Testing Is the Answer

The way to find out if a reverse osmosis system is worth installing is to contact us to perform water testing in your house. Our experts will find out exactly what is dissolved in your water, and then use this knowledge to provide you with the best filters and purifiers to give your household clean, safe water.

Call Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. in Orlando, FL to schedule water testing.

November 7th, 2016

We’ve talked before about one of the major dangers that any plumbing system faces: the pinhole leak. Copper pipes are the dominant type of pipes found in most homes today, and one of the reasons for their popularity is their resistance to the corrosion that chews away older steel pipes. But there is a type of corrosion that does affect copper, and it’s this pitting corrosion that leads to the small pinhole leaks.

Pinhole leaks may be small, but they are still a huge problem for plumbing and create immense property damage if not fixed immediately. When you have pinhole leaks in your pipes, call our plumbing repair professionals right away, and they’ll fix it. This doesn’t involve just patching the leak, however.
