white-kitchenThe kitchen has a large number of plumbing pipes and appliances serving it. The only room that uses more water for plumbing is the bathroom, and kitchens often have more appliances in them. This makes the kitchen a key place to focus in a home when it comes to finding ways to cut down on water use. And you do need to cut down: every home right now is probably using more water than necessary, and it doesn’t require many changes to start lowering your monthly water bills (and helping the environment in the process).

We’re going to look at some of the ways you can lower water use with your kitchen plumbing in Orlando, FL. Some of these methods need the assistance of great professional plumbers, and if you live in Central Florida, we’re the people to contact!

Why Our Plumbers Favor Copper and CPVC Piping

Monday, April 24th, 2017

copper-piping-and-fixturesIn the first half of the 20th century, and in fact all the way up through the 1970s, the most common type of material used in fresh water pipes for homes and businesses was galvanized steel, lead, cast iron, and even clay. But the cost of these materials, the ease with which they broke and corroded over time, as well as the dangers they posed from allowing toxicity into drinking water, led to them being replaced with new materials by the 1980s: principally copper and various types of plastic such as PEX, PVC, and CPVC. These newer piping materials reduce costs, benefit the environment, last longer, and help keep drinking water safe for households.

When you call on our plumbers to replace pipes or to handle more extensive repiping services in Winter Springs, FL, they will use a variety of different materials to see that the best job gets done. And the two materials we favor the most are copper and CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride).

So why are these two the piping materials of choice? Let’s take a closer look.

The term “spring cleaning” can mean plenty of things: it can apply to everything from your garden to the hard drive on your computer—much of which doesn’t really have anything to do with the season except that the name implies you’re getting a fresh start. After all, why not take the time in early spring to attend to some important cleaning and maintenance jobs?

But your plumbing definitely needs some attention that this time of year, since it goes through a lot of work over the winter. Even in sunny Florida, plumbing benefits from some spring check-ups and maintenance from professionals.

Taking a Closer Look at When to Replace Your Pipes

Monday, February 13th, 2017

piping-materialWhen we talk about “plumbing replacements,” much of the time we’re referring to putting in new plumbing fixtures that have worn down from age. For example, putting in a new low-flow toilet in the bathroom, or replacing a leaking kitchen sink faucet.

But there is another type of plumbing replacement that homes may need, which is extensive replacing of all the pipes. This repiping removes pipes that are suffering corrosion and decay from general wear. We’re going to take a close look at when you should arrange for old pipe replacement and new pipe installation in Orlando, FL with our team of plumbers. You may not realize it, but the time could be now. A major plumbing break can lead to expensive property damage, and getting ahead of this is a wise idea.

What Causes Slab Leaks in the First Place?

Monday, January 30th, 2017

piping-toolsThe term slab leak is a bit of plumber-speak for any leak that occurs in the cold or hot water pipes set down in the concrete foundation of a home. It can also refer to any pipe down in a rock surface, but for residential buildings this almost always applies to the foundation.

Slab leaks are major problems for homes, since not only do they end up wasting large amounts of water, they can also cause damage to the house, lead to the growth of mold and mildew, and place extra stress on the water heater if the leaks happen in the hot water lines (which is around 80% of the time). Professional plumbers are trained and equipped to locate slab leaks so they can be fixed.

But why do slab leaks start in the first place? A pipe that’s set down in concrete would seem to be well protected from the damages that can lead to pipe breaks. But there are different forces that can create a slab leak underneath a home. Below are three of the more common.

Is a Reverse Osmosis Filter Worth It?

Monday, December 5th, 2016

We offer a number of different options for homeowners who want to have their water purified and filtered before it enters their home. Among these options is the reverse osmosis filtration system, which is an extremely powerful type of filter. Unlike most filters that passively remove particles as water flows through them, an RO filter forces the water through its filter, which allows for it to use a more powerful filtration medium. The semi-permeable membrane filter can remove many kinds of heavy metals, pesticides, high levels of sodium, and other specific chemical contaminants that can get through other types of fitlers.

However, RO filters are more expensive than standard filters. Is going with a reverse osmosis system worth it?

It Depends on Your Home

It’s true that reverse osmosis is an advanced form of water purification technology. How advanced? It’s used in military applications and even to deal with nuclear contaminants. Those are impressive credentials! But your home isn’t a military base, nor does it run from an in-home nuclear power plant. (Well, at least we hope not.) Do you really need the immense power of RO working in your house?

The answer is, “Yes… if there is a high concentration of pollutants in the water that other filters won’t do well against.” These pollutants include dissolved salts (sometimes created by a water softener), mercury, lead, calcium, iron, and asbestos. There are some pollutants that RO won’t affect, however, such as certain volatile organic compounds, including chlorine and radon, as well as specific types of pesticides.

Water Testing Is the Answer

The way to find out if a reverse osmosis system is worth installing is to contact us to perform water testing in your house. Our experts will find out exactly what is dissolved in your water, and then use this knowledge to provide you with the best filters and purifiers to give your household clean, safe water.

Call Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. in Orlando, FL to schedule water testing.

How Skilled Plumbers Rescue Homes from Pinhole Leaks

Monday, November 7th, 2016

We’ve talked before about one of the major dangers that any plumbing system faces: the pinhole leak. Copper pipes are the dominant type of pipes found in most homes today, and one of the reasons for their popularity is their resistance to the corrosion that chews away older steel pipes. But there is a type of corrosion that does affect copper, and it’s this pitting corrosion that leads to the small pinhole leaks.

Pinhole leaks may be small, but they are still a huge problem for plumbing and create immense property damage if not fixed immediately. When you have pinhole leaks in your pipes, call our plumbing repair professionals right away, and they’ll fix it. This doesn’t involve just patching the leak, however. Here’s how we handle pinhole leaks.
