How Does Hydro-Jetting Work, Anyway?

One of the most important jobs that we perform in the Orlando area is drain cleaning, both residential and commercial. Drain cleaning is useful as both a preventive measure to keep a drainage system in the best shape possible and as an emergency measure to eliminate the toughest clogs and blockages. The tool that we favor the most when it comes to drain cleaning is the hydro-jetter.

How a hydro-jetter operates

The simplest explanation for hydro-jetting is that it uses blasts of water at high pressure to scour the interior of drainpipes. The pressure level of the water depends on the job, but many systems use about 4000 psi (pounds per square inch), which is effective for many jobs. Properly done, hydro-jetting can remove lime scale, silt, organic residue (grease and food deposits), and hair clogs.

The hydro-jetter itself consists of a water tank connected to an engine (electric or gas-powered) and pump to put the water under pressure. The water is sent out a long hose and nozzle attachment at the end. The nozzle can spray the high-pressure blasts in multiple directions, and there are a variety of different nozzles the plumber can use to do the best job. The plumber sends the nozzle and hose down the drainpipe and activates the engine to send out the water and scour the pipe interior.

This is a job for professionals only!

The above description may make hydro-jetting sound simple. However, only trained professional plumbers can do the actual job. The high-pressure water can damage pipes if used incorrectly, and it can pose dangers to people as well. Professionals will carefully examine the drainpipes with video inspection equipment first so they know how to correctly perform hydro-jetting, and they always wear special protective gear.
