One of the essential parts of your home’s plumbing is the water main. After all, if you don’t have a line to bring in fresh water from the municipal system, there really isn’t much good for half of the plumbing fixtures in your home. Although water mains are built from durable material, they can still suffer from damage due to root infiltration, ground shifting, corrosion from chemicals, and even lightning strikes. (Yes, as odd as this sounds, lightning is a source of pinhole leaks.)
Sometimes, you may need to have an old line replaced. Below are some of the warning signs to watch for that will indicate this is the case:
- Flooding in the yard – The water line runs underneath your property to your home, and should the line rupture or break, water will start to seep onto the ground above. If you notice large damp puddles of water that you can’t explain, the cause is likely a water line that needs replacement. Call for professionals to inspect it.
- High water bills – Any sudden increase in your water bill that cannot be accounted for by a similar increase in use is a reason to contact a plumber. An extraordinarily high bill may point toward water main problems.
- Decline in water pressure – This is one the earliest signs people receive that a water main has suffered damage. Water pressure can drop due to problems with the municipal supply, so check with your neighbors to see if they are experiencing similar issues. If it’s limited to your home, call a plumber.
- Discoloration in the fresh water – Should you notice rusty colors in your fresh water, it could be due to breaks along the water main or heavy corrosion. This usually calls for a complete line replacement.
