Winter Springs, FL—February 2, 2011 – Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc., a full-service plumbing contractor based in Winter Springs, was recently awarded two contracts for the plumbing construction of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) in Port St. Lucie, Florida for the Oregon Health and Science University.

Baltimore-based Whiting Turner Contracting Co. oversees construction of the 98,000 square feet of laboratories and offices. The three-story structure, including two equipment penthouses on the roof, is scheduled to open in 2012 and will house VGTI Florida’s research on vaccines that fight cancer and infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and dengue fever. Its studies are also focused on improving the immune system functions of the aging population.

The contracts awarded to Modern Plumbing were for the base building, excluding the underground scope of work and a Government EDA funded portion of the building project, which includes Bio Safety Level 3 laboratories. The building itself will be LEED certified upon completion.

Modern Plumbing’s scope of installation includes a variety of specialty piping for liquids and gases, with a total installed piping array of 46,898 feet or nearly 8.9 miles. In addition, the installed piping will be suspended with an estimated 4,724 concrete inserts laid out from a coordinated Building Information Model (BIM). Vertical piping will pass from floor to floor via approximately 288 fire-rated floor sleeves.

Vice President Eddie Agosto said, “This project is a perfect match for our experience and training in the biomedical and health care industries. The specialty piping, fixtures and safety features in the new VGTI facility make the precision of our work crucial. We look forward to working with the rest of the construction team.”

Modern Plumbing will be self performing 99% of their installation with an estimated 16,189 man hours of trade labor, mostly from local resources.

In addition to the plumbing fixtures, Modern will be installing specialized laboratory fixtures provided by others and equipment that includes:

Elevator sump pumps and controls

Oil separator

Re-circulating pumps

Natural gas water heaters, expansion tanks and mixing valves

Laboratory vacuum equipment and controls

Laboratory air compressor and controls

Domestic water triplex booster pump and controls

Reverse Osmosis high purity water equipment and controls

Water softening equipment and controls

Finally, the project is also nearing agreement on the incorporation of a vacuum jacketed liquid nitrogen piping system to delivery liquid gas to two locations in this high tech biomedical facility.

Although final completion is currently scheduled for March of 2012, this fast track design/build contract anticipates an earlier completion date.

Modern Plumbing Industries has been proudly serving the construction and service needs of all of Seminole County, Orange County, Osceola County and many of the areas surrounding greater Orlando since 1975. They offer a comprehensive array of services for commercial, industrial and residential customers.

By 2007, Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. had 110 employees working on large commercial or major renovation projects and the company had added some residential custom homes as well. The business had earned many safety awards along with an excellent workers compensation rating modifier. Modern Plumbing’s field technicians and office staff enjoy high quality benefits equaling the best of large corporations. Among the many benefit listings: 100% medical insurance, life insurance, short-term disability, matching 401 (K) program, bonuses, and a generous number of annual paid days off including vacation with a carry-over provision. Profits continue to be equally divided between employees, shareholders, and retained earnings. The company makes regular donations to local charities. Most important is Frank’s relationship with his employees. As a mentor, he encourages them to use every opportunity for education and advancement.

Modern Plumbing Industries has committed to help build a new home for a wounded war veteran through a Long Island New York nonprofit organization called Building Homes for Heroes.

Building Homes for Heroes provided individuals, corporations and others with an opportunity to help our severely wounded and disabled veterans and their families rebuild their lives. Many of these young men and woman are coming home badly burned, with permanent body disfigurements, missing limbs, the loss of sight or ability to walk, psychiatric conditions or paralysis. Building Homes for Heroes is committed to supporting these extraordinary men and woman, with a goal to build homes for families in dire need. We believe that it’s our responsibility to support those who have been called upon to make the ultimate personal sacrifice – to protect and safeguard our country by fighting America’s War on Terror.

Windermere County Club Foundation held a charity golf event at Windermere County Club on April 28, 2009. Organized in conjunction with Building Homes for Heroes, the event was designed to help build a mortgage-free home for Staff Sergeant William Castillo, his wife Katherine and their 4 children.

While on a rescue mission for other Marines, Staff Sergeant Castillo’s vehicle was struck by an IED. Sgt. Castillo was blown out of the vehicle but continued to fight. In the middle of the firefight he fought to get back to the Humvee to save his two buddies still in the vehicle. During the battle Sgt. Castillo was shot 5 times, including twice in the chest, once in the right leg, and once on the top of his head. Once he made his way back to the vehicle another round struck him under the chin and excited out his mouth. As he reach the vehicle and RPG struck the Humvee and severed his left leg above the knee. Sgt. Castillo was the only survivor.

It’s cold outside and all of a sudden you hear something. The room falls silent and then suddenly water comes gushing out of your wall. That’s what happened one winter’s day in November of 2008 to Terry Cook of Oviedo and Modern Plumbing was there to save the day.

Ten days prior to a very large gathering at our home, a water pipe broke in the wall between the two downstairs bathrooms. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe the resultant mess. I had the great fortune to call Modern Plumbing, owned by Frank Bracco, who sent out two of the best workers I’ve ever met. Ray and Aaron ended up re-piping the entire house, but they managed to keep the mess and clutter to a minimum. They took half and hour for lunch and returned promptly. They always had the necessary materials and never had to “run out and get something”. They finished in for days and a day later sent the drywall man to repair the areas affected by the work. He did such a skillful job of blending that we had party guests try find the areas he repaired. No one found any. The deceptive, fat-cat corporations that been in the news lately could take a page from the Modern Plumbing handbook.

Terry Cook, Oviedo.
